What is a Guardian Home?

A guardian puppy/dog is placed with a local family at no cost. The benefits to the Guardian family are they receive a top-quality puppy/dog, that must meet strict requirements to be a part of our breeding program. The puppy will undergo a large panel of genetic testing and health requirements at the Breeder’s expense.

The benefit to Forest Haven Doodle Co. is that we will never be overcrowded with dogs as we do not use any kennels. It allows us to be able to expand our program, but by also give each breeding dog the full love and attention that he/she deserves. We NEVER want our dogs to feel like their sole purpose is for breeding. Our dogs are truly treated like family.

Female Guardian Home

Once the guardian dog is of breeding age and on her second to third heat cycle, she is able to be bred. When she goes into estrus (heat), the guardian family is required to contact us immediately. An intact female has a heat cycle that lasts 10 to 21 days every 6-8 months. We will then schedule her an AI (artificial insemination) appointment with our reproductive vet. You will meet us at the vet with the dog on the schedule day. She then will be with you for approximately 63 days or until 1 week before her due date where she will then be with us until she delivers and raises/weans her puppies.

Male Guardian Home

Once the guardian dog is of age (around 10+ months), he is able to be used as a stud. When he is needed, you will bring the dog and meet us at our vet to have his semen collected to AI (artificial insemination). Males are typically retired before 5 years of age.

Additional Information

Once a male/female dog is retired from our breeding program, Forest Haven Doodle Co. will have the dog spayed/neutered at their expense and will then transfer full ownership of the dog over to the guardian family where they will continue to live a happy, loving life!

If you are receiving a Guardian Home Puppy, we will require a visit to our guardian’s home every few months during the first year to assess the puppy as well as build a healthy relationship with him/her.
